This bowl is a wonderful example, I think it is particularly beautiful with its one wide white stripe. It stands on a slightly raised foot which displays the deeply recessed bottom characteristic of mid 19th c bowls. And the hand of the potter can be seen in the subtle textural rings visible on both the rim and body. It's amazing that such a large piece, and this is a very large bowl, has survived intact for 150+ years, given its utilitarian nature.
Condition is great with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs evident. There is some expected all over crazing, and three marks inside from kiln stilts. There is one larger divit on the inside of the bowl which is likely a manufacturing event that darkened with use, as did the stilt marks. There is a bit of kiln debris caught in the glaze on the exterior. This bowl shows evidence of considerable use, which I think only makes it better. Measuring 13 7/8" across in one direction and 13 5/8" across the other way. It's height varies from 6 11/16" to 6 13/16" It's slight out-of-round dimensions are testament to it's hand thrown origin.
These bowls are part of our heritage here in the US. Used by our mothers and their mothers and theirs in a history stretching back to our agricultural past. They raised bread for families that grew the grain out of which their bread was made. They are objects to be used and cherished.
