The piece is titled in pencil on the lower left, and signed on the loser right. I am not familiar with the signature, and have been puzzling over it. The first name is definitely "Max"," and the second looks like "Orpinka" to me, but I'm really not certain of this. If anybody recognizes the name, please drop me a line.
Condition is fine with no problems to report. The frame and mat are contemporary. Measures 13 7/8" x 14 7/8" overall, and 8 7/8" x 9 7/8" inside the mat.
This is a striking piece honoring the unseen forces that drive the creative process, the demons. An interesting and thought provoking image.
==============================
A kind Ruby Lane visitor has identified this artist as Max Schenke, and says the handwriting is an old German script that is not widely recognized today.
As an addendum, I will add that Schenke was one of the key figures of the Dresden School and perhaps the finest German drypoint artist of the 1920's.
