This is a fine example with the hand of the potter visible everywhere. The body, underscored rim, and foot that all display concentric rings from being wheel thrown and hand trimmed, the pair of narrow white stripes bordered by two rich pumpkin brown stripes, the carefully formed, plump raised foot, and the hefty, slightly flared rim, all bespeak the skill and strength of the potter who could draw this massive piece up out of wet clay. American, I believe, mid to late 19th Century.
Condition is nearly perfect, no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs, although there are several places where the glaze did not take. These spots remain matte instead of shiny. This happened in the manufacture, and is an eccentricity that is testament to the hand made nature of this fabulous bowl... a mark of individuality. There are some marks from the kiln stilts, glaze pops, and a bit of debris caught in the glaze on the inside bottom. Please look at the pictures. Measures 14 5/16" in diameter one way, 14 1/16" the other way, and stands between 6 3/4" and 6 7/8" tall... WOW!
These bowls are our heritage, simple, versatile, hard working. They raised our loaves, mixed our birthday cakes, and held the apples Gramma peeled for apple butter on those crisp fall days. They help us remember and pass down our traditions. Bring this beauty home, use it, love it, keep it in the family.
