Fabulous to Fun - Serious to Silly - An Evolving Selection - Questions? Comments? Information? - Email me - mjbakst@yahoo.com
The Scandinavian Viking influence in the British Isles began in the eighth century, when they first invaded Iona, the heart of the Celtic Church, in 794. Their boat building and navigational skills, aided their plunder of Europe, Asia Minor, and Greenland, and they probably landed in North America centuries before Columbus.
There are many Celtic images of Viking longboats, and they have been favorite subjects of Scottish/English jewelers through the years, as displayed by this charming pair of cufflinks. This design is a dead-ringer for the work of Alexander and Euphemia Thompson Ritchie of Iona who used the image of a Viking longboat extensively. And with a nod to the Ritchies, I quote C. C. Colton, "Imitation is the sincerest flattery."
Condition is good, only normal wear, with one showing a bit more. The two halves of these double sided beauties are joined by five silver links. Measuring approximately 5/8" in diameter, they bear the English hallmarks for Chester 1937, and the manufacturer S (Shipton) & Co.
Put these fine old links on and wreak a little havoc of your own. A perfect match for tweeds or cashmere... naturally. Treat yourself or gift someone special.

A kind Ruby Lane visitor has provided me with the following information:
"The Ritchie's used Shipton & Co as "outworkers" and many of the Ritchie designs are hallmarked by S&CO. They were not competitors but actually did much of the production work for the Ritchie's. They also did work for Robert Allison but these are from Ritchie designs."

I try to provide photographs and descriptions that are as comprehensive as possible. However, if you have further questions about one of my pieces, please don't hesitate to contact me.
