The subject is evocative of a simpler time, engaging the viewer with gentle humor. This is a joyful piece that embodies the playfulness of an idealized era, that lives now, in our collective memories.
These children definitely look to be out of the early 20th C. The boys are all still wearing knickers, which points to a 1900 - 1920's or so date, but the girls look very 30's. The setting of the girls on the sidelines cheering, with the boys as the center of the action (after the dog and cat, of course) is not what you would see from a contemporary illustrator.
The piece is signed, but I do not know the signature. I have tried to research all the reasonable names that this might be, and have not been able to come up with any definitive answer... only possibilities. If somebody out there recognizes the signature, please drop me a line.
Condition is good. There is some light foxing overall, and the whole has darkened a bit, but certainly nothing that detracts from the appeal of this captivating piece. Overall measurements are 26 18" x 22 34", with the sight size of the mat being 16 18" x 12 78".
This is a very nice drawing, one that will bring a smile to your face every time you see it... and with the growing popularity and value of Illustration Art, a smart buy.
