This is one strange piece. An abundantly detailed drawing of a gigantic female Warrior or Priestess with spear and shield, being offered a laurel wreath by a small, presumably human, young woman. There is a large scaled serpent or dragon threatening some small humans on a stepped platform... this looks a bit like a sacrifice. In the foreground there is a frightened boy being comforted by a woman, perhaps his mother, a goat and a bull looking on, a woman balancing a bowl on her head, and some other assorted folks. All are dressed in flowing Grecian robes, or largely naked, and the action here is taking place in some kind of columned temple or similar vaguely Greek architecture that is open to the sky to let the sun stream down upon the monumental warrior. The central female warrior figure is aloof, sensual, and powerful, towering over the others, with nipples and belly clearly revealed through the drape of her robe. There's a lot going on here... and I haven't really got a clue as to what it might be.
Condition is very good, with some foxing. Framed in a natural wood frame, the piece overall measures 20 1⁄2" x 26 1⁄8", with the image matted to 12 3⁄4" x 17 3⁄8". It is unsigned, and I would guestimate a 1930's date.
This is a wonderful piece that is bound to start conversation and speculation. It looks very much like early science fiction illustrations, and should appeal to fans of fantasy and sci-fi.
Very nicely drawn, it presents a story with many possible interpretations, and seems to ask more questions than it answers.
