==============================

This little Skookum papoose doll is a souvenir from Vancouver, BC, Canada. She has the characteristic 'glancing eyes', in this case 'right glancing' (looking to the doll's right), which is considered to be looking toward health and recovery according to shamanistic belief. Some collectors will not acquire the 'left glancing' dolls as they are said to be looking toward death and misfortune.

This cutie has a composition face and what seems to be real hair. Her blanket is encircled with a wide strip of real suede on which is written "Vancouver BC Canada." Judging from the materials used, I believe this little one was made sometime after 1920, when composition faces with the characteristic 'glancing eyes' began to be used, and before 1940, when the use of human hair was abandoned almost entirely in favor of mohair. Additional factors that point to an early date is the use of real suede leather, and her hand sewn blanket wrap.

Condition is nice with a small bump on the nose, minor wear to the face paint, and a slight bend to the cardboard backing board which has two holes by which she can be hung. I see I have decided this little papoose is a girl...not sure why, just looks that way to me.

She's come a long way but still has one more journey to make... to your house.
