Fabulous to Fun - Serious to Silly - An Evolving Selection - Questions? Comments? Information? - Email me - mjbakst@yahoo.com
Included are political and novelty pinbacks, including two state buttons (Vermont and New Mexico), which are premiums from Sweet Caporal Cigarettes with 19th C patent dates on the back, and FDR pinbacks, including one of FDR running on the Liberal Party ticket.
There's a Willkie / McNary pinback, which dates to the 1940 presidential election when Willkie, an Indiana farm boy who had become a prominent Wall Street attorney, switched parties and challenged Roosevelt as a Republican, despite his never having held political office before.
There are a bunch of buttons with novelty sayings, a Red Cross pinback, two USMA military buttons off of a uniform from West Point, and in case you're in a more reverential mood, a 'Baptist' button with a cross.
There is also a Boy Scouts of America patch, a Rutger's college button, and even a plaque with a patent, a serial number, and Chinese characters, off of a Victor Talking Machine!
Then there are the keychains and charms, which include football and baseball, several 'lucky penny' novelties, and plastic items including a wrench and a liberty bell.
You name it... you can probably find it here. My guess is that it belonged to a Rutgers student who either went to West Point, or had a boyfriend who did.
Condition is as you see it, varying from item to item, but creating a fabulous whole.
These hats are considered to be Folk Art objects, and are becoming increasingly difficult to find since they are often dismantled as the items they display are collected individually. This one is as I found it, and is still intact.
A wonderful display piece... didn't one of The Little Rascals wear a hat like this? Sure to start many a conversation... and with the coming political season, perhaps more. Everyone will want to know where you managed to find it.
