A wonderful creamy white oval, a bit over 9" by about 5˝", with a wonderful transfer image of flowers and bees...those bees are just the greatest, don't you think?
The simple pierced gallery and twisted handles are old nickle or silver plated brass, with wear to the handles only. I haven't tried to polish them as I think the old patina is just perfect for this simple piece with it's naturalistic theme. The metalwork isn't the fanciest, but it's simple unrefined construction seems just right here.
I would date this piece from the late 19th C to the early 20th C, based on it's subject and style. There's a definite Art Nouveau feeling to the poppy stems. Poppies and their products were popular in all strata of society and unregulated, both in Europe and the US, around the turn of the century. There is something about the piece as a whole that looks a bit Arts & Crafts to me too...a combo of the subject, coloration, and straightforward metal work.
I don't recognize the impressed, fleur de lis like mark, or the other numbers and letter 'L', but maybe you do...please drop me a line. My guess would be European, probably French or German.
This little lovely is perfect for the odd ring or brooch on your dresser...and I just LOVE those bees!
