Jumbo was the star attraction of the London Zoo in 1882, where he gave children rides on his back, but he soon became the center of a great controversy. His keepers were having an increasingly difficult time controlling him and began to fear an accident. He was sold to Barnum for his Circus in America, and toured the US and Canada. In 1885, he was hit by a railroad train, killing him, and derailing the train.
Condition of this plate is great, no problems to report. It measures 6 18" in diameter.
A marvelous piece, these tin ABC ware plates are becoming more and more sought after by collectors, but I bet you knew that.
