Just look at this fantastic piece of Victorian Stumpwork. A type of raised and padded embroidery that has its origins in the 17th C. The subjects may vary, but it's always worked sculpturally.

This rare piece of 19th C Victoriana was created, attached to a velvet backing, and finally framed in a handmade shadowbox frame. It is stunningly presented, and oh, so Victorian.

The woolen leaves and flowers are really lovely, and so skillfully worked it makes me wonder if there's anybody left who still knows how to do this. The leaves are an olive green and the flowers are mostly soft white with some variegated blue and violet, and one small accent of red. I wonder...did this have some special significance to the maker?

The frame is original and in great shape. No losses worth mentioning, just a little normal wear...isn't that incredible? And the glass is old and wavy, just the way you want it to be. there are some minor streaks and lint that's accumulated over the years on the inside of the glass, but I'm going to leave that to you...really, it just adds character.

Look at the back, it's one board! And it's old, old, old. The dark oxidized wood is just what you'd expect to find on an honest 19th C antique. It's held on with little nails...some original and some added over the years...and further secured with wire and eyelets.

This fabulous piece measures 15" x 24½ " x 2¾". These untouched Victorian pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find, but I bet you knew that.
