Vintage M & W Kerosene Bicycle Lamp with Original Bracket

This old bicycle lamp is an M & W '98 which would suggest that this is the 1898 model. The name is on the vent over the burner along with; Made by The Matthews and Willard Mfg. Co. - Waterbury Conn. U.S.A.. The company name and information is also on the bottom of the reservoir along with numerous patent dates mostly from 1897. The lever on the front below the lens slides to release the reservoir and then the wick assembly snaps out so the reservoir can be filled. The side jewels, one red and one green, are pinned on the front side and rotate upward to allow access to the wick for lighting. It has its original convex front lens. The bracket on the back is decorative with a floral and leaf design. This also has the original clamp for the bicycle which is a hard one to find. The whole lamp is nickel over brass but parts of the clamp are steel.

The lamp is complete but shows wear. The nickel is weak and brass shows through in many areas. The body is fairly good with minor dents. There is a stress crack in the metal between the bracket arms behind the clamp. The felt on the clamp has been replaced.
