This book, "Traditional Samplers", was written by Sarah Don, and published by Viking Penguin in 1986.The book begins with a history of samplers, from the earliest samplers made in Europe in the sixteenth century, to the classroom samplers made in colonial America by schoolgirls, with many black-and-white photographs. Instructions on stitching and framing samplers are given in detail with illustrations.

The second section of the book has color photos, charts and instructions for making 22 contemporary samplers based on vintage designs.

The book measures 8-34 by 11-1/4 inches, and contains 144 numbered pages. The hardcover boards are covered in black fabric, printed in gold on the spine. The binding is tight, and the book is in very good condition The dust jacket has a one-inch tear at the top of the spine, but is otherwise in good condition.
