Voile Blouse, Ruffled and Tucked, Early 1900s

This pretty blouse would have been worn with a long skirt in the early days of the 1900s. It has the puffy front so fashionable at that time for the “pigeon-breast” silhouette. It is made of a semi-transparent cotton voile, with six rows of pleats and tucks down the front. The ruffles of the collar extend down each side of the button band to the waistband. The blouse is waist-length, ending with a band at the waistline. There are four wonderful round crocheted buttons.

The blouse fastens at the top and bottom of the button band with hooks and eyes, and the ruffled cuffs are closed with snaps. The shoulder and armhole seams are fagoted.

The armhole area is worn and fragile, as are the snaps at the cuffs, and one of the pleats on the right side has been resewn at an earlier time. There is also a tiny hole and a small light brown stain on the back,and a 1/2-inch hole in the ruffle near the top fastening. The blouse measures 13-1/4 inches across the shoulders, and 16 inches from neck seam to the waist at the back. the waistband is 27 inches.
