Victorian Black Pleated Jacket Blouse, Lined – Exquisite Fabric

This garment is a beautifully-constructed jacket or blouse made of strips of beautiful silk taffeta which have been narrowly pleated and joined with rows of fagoting. The underside of the curved sleeves has the same material but without the pleating. The tops of the sleeves are gathered and puffy, and there is a peplum effect below the fitted waist.

There is a separate collar piece (shown in one of the photos) which somehow is attached to the simple band collar of the jacket.

The garment, including the sleeves, is lined with a grey cotton print fabric which buttons in the front, while the jacket fastens over the lining with hook-and-eye closures which are hidden by a placket.

The jacket is too small to fit on my mannequin – the dimensions are probably close to a size 6. It is 11 inches across the shoulders, and measures about 34 inches at the bust directly under the armholes. It is approximately 20 inches from shoulder to hem and 28 inches at the waist. The lining is cut smaller (24 inches at the waist.), and there is a small label at the bottom of the lining (seen in the photo) - the wording is worn away.

The jacket is in amazingly good shape – there are some worn areas on the collar band and the hem edges of the sleeves, and the undersides of the sleeves near the armholes have some fabric splits. The lining has wear near the waist and is stained around the neck. I have lightened the photos a little in order to show the detail of this black garment.
