These are the original first editions of this series of books about children in different countries. The books are: “The Little Swiss Wood-Carver” (1929), “Little Philippe of Belgium” (1930), Little Anne of Canada” (1931), and “Little Erik of Sweden” (1938). They were written for children by Madeline Brandeis and illustrated with photographs taken by the author in each of the countries (except the photos in the Sweden book, which were taken by Carsten Grande).

The books are a learning experience as well as delightful stories for pre-teens to read, as the plots provide lots of information about the country in which the story takes place. Each book has a foreword by the author explaining the background of the story idea, and the books on Canada and Belgium include a few sentences about the people who posed for the pictures. Some also have a pronunciation guide for the foreign words used in the story.

The books were published by Grosset & Dunlap, by arrangement with the A. Flanagan Company. They contain an average of 170 pages and measures 7 inches by 8-3/4 inches. Each book has a light blue hardcover printed in black and red, with a blue cloth spine. The endpapers are printed in red with graphics similar to the cover, and there are numerous photographic illustrations.

Although condition of the books is very good overall, there is some shelf wear on the spine and corners. The covers are lightly soiled. Only the Canada book has a colorful dust jacket, but it is in poor condition.

These books will be protectively packaged and shipped in a box by media mail, including postal insurance within the US. International postal insurance may be declined if not desired.
