This gorgeous vintage black dress is a simple shift, but superbly shaped by two velvet strips which begin at the armhole seams near the bust and curve down past the waist, ending at the side seams near the hips. These velvet strips also become the top edging of a pocket at each side, and then continue down the side seams of the skirt to the hem. This marvelous soft velvet shrug or capelet dates to the 1930s or 1940s. It’s a creamy white velvet with a rayon crepe lining. The shrug has a shawl collar with a double-breasted overlap in front, held by two black glass buttons with silvery accents. The bottom of the shrug, when buttoned, measures 30 inches around.
