This lovely lavaliere from the turn of the last century is a pointed oval of stamped metal with an elaborate design, finished with a gold wash and antiqued highlighting. In the center of the pendant is a bezel-set oval stone resembling a turquoise, accented above with a pretty leaf. The box chain is attached to the pendant by a pretty bail with a floral design. The Victorians loved beetle jewelry, and I especially like this one. The head, legs, antennae and wings are made of a gold-color metal. There are two rhinestone eyes. The body of the beetle is a large red-brown carnelian cabochon stone, set firmly into the mounting. The pinstem, which is slightly bent, fits into a tube clasp, which dates this unique piece to the middle-to-late 1800s. The brooch measures 1-3/4 by 1-1/8 inches, and is in very good condition.
