Rooster & Hen Salt & Pepper Shakers ~ Majolica Type, Generous Size

This is the second highly coloured rooster and hen combo I've been lucky enough to come across recently. Shakers like this, though increasingly hard to find, remain perennially popular.

These birds were hand painted in shades of yellow, green, brown, and black. Red cold paint was skillfully applied to their heads and faces. Unsigned, but certainly Japanese, the hen is 4 inches high and 2 1/2 inches across, while the rooster is larger 5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. Both birds have cork stoppers.

The happy couple is in great shape, having no chips, cracks or repairs. The hen has a glaze skip near one foot. Both pieces are lightly crazed and both have extremely minor loss to the red cold paint on their heads.
