Robert Belyea was a member of a famous rowing family in New Brunswick, Canada. His relative, Hilton Belyea, set a world record with a time of 9:36 for the 1.5 mile event at the 1921 New England Single Scull Championships in Boston. In addition, he captured the Canadian Henley Singles Scull Championship in 1921-22, and represented Canada at the 1924 Olympics, winning a bronze medal for sportsmanship from the Paris Olympic Committee in 1924. He was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.
All the other trophies were for rowing. This skating award is 9 inches tall, including the 3 inch high wooden base on which the cup sits. The cup is 4 inches across at its widest point. In very good condition, one of the handles is a bit misshapen, and there is a tiny split in the rim, noticeable only upon close inspection. Otherwise it is fine. The bottom of the cup is signed, EPBM, 100, Standard S.C. (Silver Company) of Toronto Limited, Canada.
The final picture shows all the trophies, as found, from the same estate. Antique trophies such as these make a fabulous display, as noted in the March 2008 issue of "Country Living" magazine.
