Robert Belyea's family was famous for rowing. A relative, Hilton Belyea, set a world record with a time of 9:36 for the 1.5 mile event at the 1921 New England Single Scull Championships in Boston. He won the Canadian Henley Singles Scull Championship in 1921-22, and represented Canada at the 1924 Olympics, winning a bronze medal for sportsmanship from the Paris Olympic Committee in 1924. These honours led to his induction into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.
Standing 9 1/4 inches tall, including the 2 1/2 inch hardwood base, and 6 inches across the handles, this antique trophy is in excellent condition, having no breaks or dents. The wooden base shows some wear. There are no maker's marks to be seen.
All the trophies, as found, are shown in the second last photo. Not only pieces of sports history, old trophies like these make a wonderful display, as shown in the March 2008 issue of "Country Living" magazine.
