In a more elegant age, knife rests were a part of any well laid table. Long before fast food and microwave dinners, when the well-to-do dined, knife rests kept the tablecloth from being soiled when the carving was complete.

This matched pair is made from heavy glass. Each traditional barbell shaped rest is 4 1/4 inches long. The middle section, an octagon with four wide and four very narrow sides, creates a prism effect when the light shines through it. Intricate designs featuring geometric shapes decorate each end.

As may be expected, normal wear can be seen close up - tiny nicks and chips, a history of use - but no major flaws. Tiny chips on the ends nearly disappear into the pattern. Over all, they are in really lovely shape.

So if you plan to entertain with a formal dinner, let these knife rests add an old-world touch while they protect your fine tablecloth. Or dress each of them up in a festive ribbon for a unique table decoration.
