The bell shape of the teapot, formed from leaves, is echoed in the applied flower hanging from the branch forming the handle. Another rolled leaf becomes the spout. The colours -deep green, dark brown, and sunny yellow - combine in a wonderfully natural look, attesting to the influence of the Aesthetic Movement in late 19th century England.
The heavy pottery teapot, 7 1/2 inches tall to the top of the handle, and 6 1/4 inches across the spout, is signed on the bottom with a D, and holds 1 cup of liquid. I wonder, looking at the diminutive size of the pot and the cups which were acquired with it, if this was a child's tea set.
Over 100 years old, this teapot wears its age well. The signs are few: a tiny chip on the underside of the top, barely visible when the lid is in place; a minute flake off the underside of the bell-shaped flower, which can't be seen from the front; and crazing all over. The long side of the handle has an old, extremely good repair, possibly professional, just where it joins to the teapot. None of these minor flaws affect the delicate charm of this piece.
The cups, 2 1/2 inches high by 4 1/2 inches across, also have applied flowers, leaves and twig handles. Incised on the bottom of one is G, on the other, V. Aside from one small chip on the bottom edge of one cup, and overall crazing, these cups are perfect. The entire set is extremely clean and appears seldom used.
This darling little tea set will make any majolica lover's heart happy.
