Well, that's the name I gave him, anyway, as I'm sure this figural humidor was made in England, in the late 1800s. He's a stern looking fellow, crafted with great attention to detail, and hand painted in colours typical of English majolica. At 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches across, he is unsigned but for the numbers 6930 and 61 incised on the bottom.
Bulldogs can be quite scrappy at times, and this old guy seems to have picked up a few scars along the way. His face, thankfully, is perfect, with no damage at all, but his hat has not fared so well. Clearly shown in the pictures below are several chips. Two are on the underside of the rim, one at the back which is just under 1/2 an inch long. The other, much smaller, is on the side. On the back of the hat, along the side, are three chips, each about a 1/4 of an inch long. On the front of Winston's hat there are two more - one very tiny, the other 1/4 inch long. There is also a 1 1/2 inch long hairline crack on the back portion of his hat.
Sadly, this wonderful old figural tobacco jar is not perfect, so the price has been adjusted accordingly. He could certainly be restored to his former state, if desired. Still, having a great deal of personality, and being an excellent display piece, I'm sure Winston will find a warm welcome awaiting him.
