This is a very rare scene for a Chinese antique embroidery:

2 men playing chess or a similar game, in a tavern, with a giant God in the clouds watching everything from above.

Possibly a famous Chinese legend.

The piece is extremely old by Chinese embroideries standards, and I would date it back to the 1780s.

It has survived to this day, due to its choice of materials:

what looks like a woven cotton satin as the background and many embroidery parts which are also done with cotton.

There is couched gold thread everywhere and some areas with satin stitch for more sensitive rendering like the hands and faces.

Most Chinese embroideries are made of formal decorative motifs, with small vignettes here and there, showing tiny characters in realistic activities.

A large scene depicting everyday life like this one is therefore totally unusual.

The 2 men playing chess have quite interesting expressions. You can really read the momentum of the game.on their faces! One is making a new move with obvious glee, while the other is staring in disappointment.

You will notice they still have the famous elongated ears!

The antique Chinese furniture is interesting, particularly the old Ming table, and so are all the costumes, which have totally unique details never seen in later Qing pieces.

The style of the embroidery is also quite different from later Qing, more simple, also more scattered in space.

This spatial void is impossible to find later, as embroideries become more and more ornate and compact.

This unique treasure has been framed with an ultra simple gold rim, an outline which reveals all its beauty.

A rare and prestigious piece, which could never leave China today!

MEASUREMENTS: Length: 20 1/4" Width: 13 1/4".

CONDITION: In very good condition. Only one area of the background has frayed. See last pic. The God's hair is gone. The placeholder with the original shape remains. A few minor embroidery losses here and there. Even fading consistent with age. Nos stains.

Will be shipped Expedited from Paris (5-7 days guaranteed) fully insured and with signature at delivery.

It is my advice to remove the glass for this international transit.

And shipping has been calculated without the glass.

Shipping with the glass is $15 more.

Replacement glass from any hardware store will be less than this. Also you may want to to replace it with plexi for the future.
