This is the only Hippie needlepoint I have found in the past 5 years, in the Santa Monica/Venice area, so fertile in 1960s memorabilia, so I can really say, this is a rare artifact.
The age of Aquarius which was a major song in the Musical: "Hair", is literally the symbol of New Age.
Hippies believed that with this new conjunction of planets, the world would become less industrial and more spiritual. As Dylan said: "for the times they are a changin'
In the needlepoint, the water symbolically becomes flowers and irrigation waves, as it brings life to the world.
Aquarius is of course very reminiscent of a real Hippie! But this only makes the piece more authentic and more endearing!
