An exquisite miniature Chinese rice paper painting showing a Chinese mother with 3 young children in front of a family altar. This is very likely a mourning painting, which is quite rare for rice paper paintings, with the elder brother in charge of the ceremony. There are 3 offerings on the altar, one for each member of the family except the baby, and some candles burning.
The painting is from the Qing Dynasty, mid 19th Century, circa 1860.
It is framed with an original rice fibers frame that is quite old too, though probably not original to the piece.
The painting has a typical antique rice paper split.
This seems to be inevitable with rice paper, which is such an amazingly thin material, just like fraying for silk. It is alas, just a question of time.
Even so, colors are still extremely fresh and vibrant, even after a Century and a half!
