Actually this is a self portrait (considering the features) and Chagall shows himself as a young and handsome acrobat, somewhat disarticulated by what may have been a tricky task to achieve in life!
He is rewarded for his performance by an older lady clown who brings him a bunch of flowers.
The circus people are watching, while a character plays the flute in the upper right corner. Possibly another self portrait celebrating the happy outcome. A horse head can also be seen moving towards the lower left corner.
Except for the horse dancer, all the elements of a classic Chagall circus scene are there, rendered in black with some patches of white, against a very original muted yellow.
This is an unsigned and unnumbered work (no white margins) but I checked and it is mentioned with a picture in the Cramer's catalog raisonné of Chagall's lithographs.
I purchased the piece for my own collection 5 years ago, while still working as an Art Consultant for reputable Galleries in California selling the Modern Masters, such as Bowles Sorokko, Martin Lawrence etc. (I enclose pic of a former business business card as documentation)
This was a private acquisition though, done independently from these galleries, but for many years, I did have daily access to large inventories of these works, and also to all the reference catalogs.
