Antique 19th C Victorian/Napoleon III French Religious LACE Surplice MUSEUM Quality!

A divine (literally!) religious robe or surplice from the late 19th Century in superb condition, with the most heavenly hand made lace.

The piece comes from the same amazing private French collection as my other lace pieces and represents about the ultimate in lace work done at the time of Napoleon III.

The lace is not only HUGE, it is completely "arachnean" with only the thinnest thread holding the whole piece together.

This total lack of materiality creates a very impressive effect and was probably meant to create a sense of ethereal spirituality.

The top part is a super thin batiste with an embroidered border. Poetic detail, there is even a tiny cross embroidered inside the collar!

These antique surplices are so stunning they make excellent elements of decor.. including very original curtains.

They can also of course become spectacular costumes at parties!

CONDITION: Best condition possible with no repairs necessary. The surplice has been washed by hand and is fresh and clean. Lily white, with no yellowing whatsoever, and no stains.

A variety of mendings in the batiste part, most of them original to the piece, and wear to the collar edge. Probably a few micro repairs in the lace, but they are not visible.
