Kesi is an ancient silk technique that disappeared completely at the turn of the 20th Century. No reproductions have been made in modern times and Kesi textiles are therefore eagerly sought after.
This is a front badge representing the Paradise flycatcher which is the 9th Civilian rank in the QIng Dynasty (the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree!)
The badge belonged therefore to a young Mandarin, and seems to have more youthful floral motifs than most: waterlilies, peonies.
Definitely a charming and fresh representation of a new social status, with a bird that seems to want to fly higher!
