This is the end of the Pont Aven School, late 19th C to very early 20th, when all the fashionable Parisian and European painters were moving to Brittany with their brushes, to emulate the Masters.

Brittany was the ultimate exotic destination at the time, a little bit like Outer Mongolia today! with people living close to nature and ancient traditions, wearing folklore costumes, and producing exquisite crafts of all kinds: lace, wood and stone carving, pottery and painted earthenware, among others.

The scene shows a "Bretonne" wearing the daily lace bonnet, a long peasant skirt, and probably walking in wooden clogs. The sky is overcast as is always the case in this area at the extreme West of the Continent.

The painter chose this picturesque farm with its thatched roof and spacious pond, because it also has something remarkable at the front:

Serving as a natural fence to the farm, is a stunning alignment of "Menhirs", man-organized stones and slabs dating back to the Neolithic Age when Celtic populations from Northern Europe were aligning ritual stones like in the Stonehenge area.

MEASUREMENTS: Width: 28 3/4" Height: 23 1/2" (definitely large for the time!)

LISTED? There is a Weil listed in the French Benezit for that period, who seems to correspond very well to the style, though there is no signature printed in the book for comparison.

Obviously a top professional with intense academic training, the Weil of this painting could easily qualify.

CONDITION: The oil is in very good condition with normal, minimal wear for its age. The canvas is sturdy, and there is only one small cut, about half an inch in the bushes on the right handside, and the few, usual, pinholes, visible when you hold the canvas to the light.

No need therefore for restoration, just minor retouches, though even this, is optional.
