Fine Antique Porcelain: French, German, English, European & Hand Painted
The most intricate artistry decorates these two lovely early French Plates painted in the Limoges style. You must look at the close ups of the decoration around the rims. A gathering of satin ribbons with floral details, interlaced with wavy garlands of violet florals. The artist painstakingly duplicated the sheen, the folds, the very fibers of the ribbon itself. There is no transfer on these plates. The scenes and ribbon were all done by hand. This is a couple, painted seperately on each plate.
The plates are 8 3/4"D. One features a woman in early french grab, sitting in a field with yellow fellows framing the grassy knoll. Lovely trees and sky in the background. The gentleman on Plate #2, showing his masculine side, sitting in the grass with beautiful scenery. I wonder if these were portraits of a victorian couple!
Condition: The plate with the woman is in very good condition, no chips, cracks, crazing. There was a very thin gold line around the exterior center of the plate. This is much worn from sitting underneath the gentleman plate. The gentleman plate did suffer a minor chip at the rim. I would said about 1/4". I have shown a close up and you can compare the size of the chip to the bow that it is near. No other flaws.
Both paintings are in excellent condition, no scratches or wear.
Neither plate is marked. There is an old sticker with red along the rim. Both bottoms are glazed. Due to the subject matter and painting I am estimating the age to be between Old Paris 1870-1880's
