Alberto Ruiz VELA (1920-2006) Born in Mexico City in 1920, Vela majored in art at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. One of his private teachers was Carlos Ruano Llopis, the great Valencian painter and bullfighter. Vela too became a bullfighter but quickly made that a pastime and painting his full time occupation.
He immigrated to the United States in 1952, painting first in Miami, New York and Chicago before settling in Southern California.
His work has great strength and is both dramatic and soothing at the same time. The warmth, color, and sparkle of his work plus a wonderful sense of composition result in canvases full of color and solid form. The simplification of line, form, and color achieves the maximum intensity of expression by suppressing everything that might diminish its effect.
