This item is a WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL PAGE TURNER. It's fabricated out of a piece of Nave Roof Oak taken from the cathedral in 1896 during a rebuilding. The page turner measures 14 1/2" long. It is inscribed along the top - "Winchester Cathedral Nave Roof Oak 1086 - 1896. The handle of the turner is decorated with various ecclesiastical l carvings. The reverse side is undecorated.

Rather than working as a lever to crack the nut, this one has a screw on the handle which as turned tightens inside the squirrel in order to open the nut by squeezing it until it cracks. The nutcracker is in superb condition with excellent color and patina. There are no chips, cracks, breaks of repairs. It stands 8 1/2"H when the handle is fully open and 7 1/2" when closed 7 1/4.
