Antiques & Vintage Treasures from Around the World with Easy, Affordable Shipping of Even the Largest Pieces
ATTRIBUTES: This is a ravishing old bed dating from about the 1860s or so. It's French, of course, and it's beautifully designed with very deep side rails with carved corners and a towering carved crown. It is superbly done in walnut, mahogany and accents of a variegated grain, possibly a pale bird's eye mahogany. The bed fits together with the original bolts and it's very sturdy and strong.
This bed will use full size bedding, though it's just a hair less than full size. For that reason, and because the details are so divine it would be a shame to cover them up, we're offering it with a brand new mattress of the type used with bunk beds. That's a good quality mattress on a solid board base to give it the sturdiness of a box spring. The benefit is that it's only as high as a mattress ~ without the box spring, but with, as we said, the support of a board beneath. If you prefer a double thickness mattress set, we can do that at cost ~ write for a quote.
POTENTIAL USES: This is the kind of a bed you'll want to make a nest in. It feels like a carved, luxurious, wooden cocoon the way the crown towers above and those extra deep rails cradle the sides. Pile it with feather beds and down pillows, old linens from Argentina or France. It's an excellent piece and increasingly rare these days.
ORIGIN: French c. 1860s or so
CONDITION: Good and sturdy condition. There is some evidence of past (long past) wood munchers, as we typically see on old French furniture of this era. It's a sturdy bed, nice a tight and solid. The munchers are gone and the bed's still here.
SIZE: Headboard: 56 wide, 60 tall; footboard 56 wide, 37.5 tall; 51 inches between rails (full size is 53), 77.5 between head- and footboard (full size is 75).
SHIPPING: $196 ships this grand piece and its mattress to your nearest freight terminal for pickup, just as we used to pick up packages at the old catalog stores. Insurance and tracking are included in this price.
CAN'T PICK UP? For most folks, freight home delivery is running around $50-80 or so. May be higher in biggest cities, northern CA and Pacific NW. Just send us a zip and we'll get you a firm, no surprises quote.
