Unique, Antique, Vintage & Collectible Treasures
The green hardcover is embossed on both sides with Scroll work. The front is further decorated with black designs and the title is embossed and covered with gold banners as is, the author’s name. The spine is embossed with an elaborate design around the title and is also decorated with a layer of gilt. The cover is in good very good condition. The spine has frayed a bit at both ends where it rubs on the shelf and there are two areas where there is a split on the seem which can be seen in the photos. The corners are bent. The pages are yellowed but are not torn or written on with the exception of the front cover page which has the name of a previous owner E. B. Srimner (sp?) Boston 1873 and a price from the past written in the upper right corner, and the very last blank page which has a small tear near the top and another pencil mark that is not legible to me, all of which can be seen in my photographs. Very minor foxing to the pages and the hint of a musty odor. I have included the first paragraphs of the original Preface and the updated Preface both written by Mrs. Cornelius. The second revised Preface makes reference to the end of the Civil war and the need for economy. Please email if you have any questions. Shipping is free within the USA and insurance is included.
Original Preface (partial) written in 1845
Mrs. Cornelius’ Preface mentions the Civil War which had just past. “In preparing this little volume, my aim has been to furnish to young housekeepers the best aid that book can give in the departments of which it treats. No printed guide can perfectly supply the place o that experience which is gained by early and habitual attention to domestic concerns. But the directions here given are designed to be minute, and of so practical a character, that the observance of them shall prevent very many of the perplexities which most young people suffer during their first year of married life>
The receipts , with the exception of about twenty which are copied from books, are furnished fro my own experience or that of my immediate friends. An ample variety is given for fringing the table of any American Family; but especial reference has been had to those have neither poverty nor riches; and such directions have been given as will enable a housekeeper to provide a good and healthful table, or, if desired, handsome one, at a moderate expense.
Preface To The Revised and Enlarged Edition
“In offering to the public a new edition of “The Young Housekeeper’s Friend,” I wish gratefully to acknowledge the favor with which it has been regarded during the twenty-five years since it first publication . I have aimed to render it more worthy of patronage by a thorough revision, the omission o a few receipts of least value, the addition of full directions for canning fruits, and more than one hundred and fifty new receipts, which have been tested by experienced housekeepers. I am indebted to several friends for kindly furnishing me some of the most valuable of these. While the lessons of economy taught by the late war have not been forgotten, I have endeavored to meet the demands of the present customs of society for a greater variety of dishes than used to though requisite for the ample supply of a gentleman’s table.
In the additions which I have, as heretofore, given much more minute direction than would be appropriate in writing for experienced housekeepers. My earnest wish still is, as it was when I first wrote a cook-book, to give real aid to ladies who have never been accustomed to family cares.
I have to request that those who use this book would pay special attention to the general Directions at the head of each chapter.
