The original pen & ink is signed by the artist, D.D. Coombs. Delbert Dana Coombs was born in Lisbon Falls, Maine in 1850 and passed in 1938. Coombs was primarily self-taught, however he studied under both Scott Leighton and Harrison Brown. Coombs work has been preserved in Maine at the Capitol, the Poland Spring Art Gallery, Bates College and at Yale.

The subject matter is of a stately man in a top hat and cradling an umbrella. In the foreground of the pen & ink is a very detailed building (possibly a state house) with an iron fence enclosing the building.

There are some penciled #’s at the bottom of the pen & ink and a pencil marking the number “3” on the border of the pen & ink to the left of the image. I am assuming that the pen & ink at one time was copied and used in a newspaper, hence the reason for the various pencil markings.

The pen & ink is in its original oak frame.

It is 9 ½” tall, 7 ½” wide and has its original glass over the pen & ink..

The condition of this piece is good with some discoloration to the paper which is fairly common for a paper of this age. The circa is 1910 to 1920.
