We welcome International customers! Ich spreche deutsch. Je parle un peu de français.
Seated on a gilded rocky base is a young woman, dressed in a traditional dirndle and apron, with one bird in a birdcage on her right side and another bird perched upon her left hand. Note the graceful modeling of her face and delicate hands, plus the row of lace trim on her apron. The attractive spring color combination of soft green and puce is one I occasionally saw on the dirndls of Germany long ago. The gold Maltese cross draped at her neck is noteworthy from the perspective of antique jewelry of the period. The tiny bird on her wrist is surprisingly detailed as well. The sculptural form of the figure is superb viewed from any direction.
The underside bears the Nymphenburg mark of an impressed shield (5-6 mm.) plus an impressed number 48. The shield resembles those used after 1875. A similar figure is on exhibit in the Bavarian National Museum. An illustration and further information about the model can be found in Ziffer, 'Nymphenburger Porzellan,' p. 79.
Width of the base c. 6 3/4 in. (17 cm.); Height c. 6 1/4 in. (16 cm.)
The figure displays beautifully! But, as shown in the images, it does have some losses: part of a finger on her right hand, tips of the ribbons on her sleeves and shoes; plus an old repair to the left shoulder, which is fortunately not badly discolored as so many are. I feel that the rarity and charm of the model outweigh the few blemishes of age, but have priced according to the imperfections. A very rare figure for the serious collector of German porcelain!
