What a glorious find! A museum quality, 18th century French charger (large plate) from the Marseille faiencerie of Veuve Perrin, circa 1765. The hand-painted decoration features asymmetrical bunches of flowers and butterflies in the rococo style (Louis XV), delicately painted in green (camaieu vert) with tiny black lines for outlines. The lobed rim is also trimmed with a green border. The VP mark appears on the back rim of the plate. Matching plates and a platter from Veuve Perrin are illustrated in "Histoire de la Faience Francaise: Moustiers & Marseille," by Dorothee Guilleme Brulon, pp. 101-102, 1997. (See images.) The glaze has a lovely sheen. The green enamel is thick and raised, creating a sense of depth and a very hand-painted look.

Diameter: 11 1/4 inches (28.5 cm.)

Visible in the images, the charger has an old repair on the glaze of the rim at 3 o'clock and another small one sealing a short hairline at 7 o'clock; but, the plate rings clear and bright. Such repairs are quite common for this age faience and do not have much effect on value, due to the rarity of such fine early faience. For example, a similar, but, smaller (25 cm.) plate with chips brought 1182 Euros (currently $1,445.87) at Drouot auction, in Paris, in 2001. (Ref.
