A gorgeous faience plate from Switzerland! (Assiette Suisse en faience) Its design is gorgeous and very finely painted. Borrowing from the popular, French rococo style, the center bears an elaborate cartouche or medallion with an alpine Swiss figure within a landscape: a shepherd in the traditional Appenzeller festival attire of red waistcoat and canary-yellow knickers. The cartouche is surrounded by sprigs of roses, and below is the name of the small alpine town, Appenzell, which lies south of Lake Constance in northeastern Switzerland. The rim of the plate is feather edged in a rosey red. The back of the plate bears the Zurich mark, a simple Z with a dot, plus signs of pernettes from stacking in the wood kiln. The plate dates to the late 19th century.

Diameter c. 8 1/2 inch (21.5 cm)

The plate is in superb condition with no cracks, hairlines or signs of restorations; just the expected bits of glaze flaking on the rim. These are on the very tips, hardly even visible, also because the underlying paste is a deep red clay. A rare and wonderful example for the collector of faience and other tin-glazed wares!
