We welcome International customers! Ich spreche deutsch. Je parle un peu de français.
The Strasbourg factory was the most technically innovative and prestigious of the faienceries in eastern France. Much of their utilitarian production was un-marked, as is the case with this plate. But, to those who are informed, their work is un-mistakable in its colors, forms, originality and technical quality. Very seldom do pieces of Strasbourg come on the market. Most are now in museums, such as the Sevres museum near Paris or at Palais Rohan in Strasbourg. Yet, a piece of Strasbourg is essential for any serious collection of 18th century French faience. Here is your opportunity to add a piece to your collection!
Diam. c. 9 7/8 in. (25 cm.)
Condition is excellent with no cracks or hairlines. As is typically the case with faiences of this age, there is some glaze fritting on the rim and the occasional firing flaw in the glaze from the early production techniques. Tin glaze is notoriously fragile and such flaws are to be expected and accepted as signs of the early, still innovative years of faience production. They simply attest to age. No one will mistake their authenticity, as so often happens with the unblemished 19th century examples mistakenly dated as 18th century. PLEASE CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR LARGE PHOTOS.
