A VERY OLD, silver travel fork (fourchette de voyage) with two iron prongs, entirely covered on both sides with magnificent filigree and relief work! The fork is similar to French, Dutch, German and Italian examples from the late 16th to early 18th century, as shown in the magnificent J. Hollander Collection of cutlery. (Ref. What a special find! Coming from an Austrian estate, a well marked 17th century beaker from the renowned silversmiths of Augsburg, in what is now Germany. The Augsburg silversmiths of the 16th - 19th century were the unchallenged European masters of the craft. The cup is hallmarked for Augsburg 1696 and bears the maker's mark HH for Hans Heinrich Herring.
