About Us
Martha's Art Mart specializes in 20th century art - everything from bold abstracts to groovy retro objects d'art, and realism to impressionism. We actively seek out the unique and unusual, finding items at estate sales, auctions, and second hand sources. We are not collectors - we buy to sell to you at prices much lower than the galleries and antique malls.
During our long stay in the Milwaukee area we found many works by regional artists. Our shop shows mid century works from artists who attended the Layton School of Art (closed in 1974), one of the top five art schools in the US. We are proud to offer fine paintings and prints from this talented pool of Wisconsin artists.
Those regional collections also contained fine works from listed artists - Karel Appel, K. B. Hwang, Robert Saint-Brice, Tomoe Yokoi, Marko Spalatin, Leonardo Nierman, James Kuiper - and others. Wisconsin certainly was a treasure trove of art collecting!
Browsing our shop you will see what at first seems an odd assortment of artwork, then after a while a pattern emerges! These uncovered treasures - orphaned art - have been rescued by a keen eye. You will find listed artists next to students next to outsiders - and all high quality, desirable pieces.
You may know us from our eBay store, Orphaned Art and Objects Mart, where we developed a strong following over the past few years. Feedback score: 100% with 831 feedbacks! Now we are pleased to have a shop here and we are looking forward to meeting the Ruby Lane customers.
Feel free to contact me with questions or special requests. We recently moved to sunny Los Angeles and we've already found some excellent pieces.
Stop by to browse and find your treasure! Tell your friends too!
CONDITION GUIDE
The artwork we sell comes from estates and other second hand sources. Most items are in great shape, but because they are used or vintage, they could have flaws. We photograph them and describe the virtues and problems in as much detail as possible. Please ask questions if we haven't been clear enough.
Condition guide - grading is subjective but I try to be true to the following:
FINE -- may have minor flaws: frame may have dings, minor edge wear to work that is not noticeable when framed
VERY GOOD -- some flaws: frame has dings, minor edge rips or wear that are noticeable but does not detract
GOOD -- flaws: frame has dings, weak, work has rips, wear, moisture damage that are noticeable
FAIR -- flaws: frame is damaged and/or weak, work is worn and/or damaged
