This is an unusual and amusing bottle You could practically make up a story to explain the composition of this little piece. Starting at the bottom, there is a round wicker-looking basket with 2 handles. The basket is a rich dark brown. The color settled into the crevices allowing the higher portions of the basket to remain lighter or white. A very realistic looking basket results. Coming out of the basket is what looks like the top of a round bottle in a deep forest green. And emerging from the opening of the bottle is a little white dog. We can only see his head and neck. He has small pointed ears, sad looking eyes, a light orange muzzle with a little black nose and mouth. Around the dog's neck is a collar of white beads decorated with gold. The collar is wider than the dog's neck so this keeps him from falling into the hole. The head is the stopper of this bottle. The core attached to the head is surrounded by cork which fits snugly into the opening. All but the dog's head has a shiny clear glaze. There are no chips or damages to the basket or bottle. What you see in the pictures is reflected light. The dog has black eyes, nose and mouth. Reddish brown highlight his muzzle, "eyebrows" and a touch of color to the inside of his little ears. There is a slit, about 1/8" incised into the head between the reddish muzzle and under his left eye. This does not appear to be a damage, but rather something that may have occured during production. The entire head and collar have a light clear glaze.
The bottle is about 3 1/2" tall and about 2 1/2" at its widest point. The base is white bisque and unmarked. I believe it is of German manufacture from the early 20th century. A light and lovely scent of perfume can still be detected on the cork and in the bottle. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. There was likely more gilt on the dog's collar originally, but the features hand painted on the dog's face appear intact.
This little bottle would be an unusual addition to a perfume bottle collection or an enjoyable stand alone piece.
