This is a Victorian hand blown, hand enameled glass, Easter darning egg. It measures 3 3/8" long and 2 3/8" in diameter. It has a broken, unpolished pontil. I date this from the last quarter of the 1800's although it may be earlier. I am no expert so if any of you know differently, please email me. This glass egg is obviously made to celebrate Easter, but many of them are either plain or have hand painting but no reference to any holidays. They were made to put inside of a sock so that it could be more easily darned as the needle would stop and slide over. These eggs were also used to replace real eggs underneath real laying hens so that they would not know that their eggs had been stolen, and would stay calm and continue laying. Glass eggs were preferred by the farm women because of the ease of cleaning in order to be used in their household chore of sock darning. lol. Happy Collecting!!!!
