This is a sterling coat or hair ( although the bristles seem very soft) brush. It measures 4 3/4" long,1 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" tall. On the end, above the word 'STERLING' are three hallmarks, the first, although very worn may be a lion, the second is definitely an anchor, and the third is a letter, perhaps a 'B'. If I am right, this mark stands for Gorham. Gorham started in 1851 although I think that this is about 50 or so years later than that, but definitely Victorian. On the other end are the letters 1258 above a funny looking squarish circle, or curved corner square, with a squiggly line in the top of the circle sticking out on either side and the middle, looking almost like a hollow face with a funny hat on top. Of course we all look at clouds and each of us can see different things, look at the picture and let me know what you see!!!!. The bristles are set in celluloid and the sterling cover does not have a tight fit. The sterling has widened out on either side, in the center, more on one side than the other. There is a chip in the celluloid and a nick in the silver of which I will add a picture just as soon as I get them processed. There are also various dents in the sterling along the edges. Still, it is a great piece to add to your collection. Happy Collecting!!!
