This is 'The Growing World; or PROGRESS OF CIVILIZATION, and the wonders of Nature, Science, Literature and Art, Interspersed with a useful and Entertaining collection of miscellany by the best authors of our day. ILLUSTRATED. SOLD BY SUBSCRIPTION ONLY.' Published by W. M. Patterson & Co 1881. This book measures 10 1/4" long 7 1/2" wide and 2 1/4" thick with 512 pages. The illustrations are I think, engravings but I am no expert and may be wrong, they may be block prints. The pages are intact, generally nice and clean, no folded pages either. The cover shows much wear at the top and bottom of the spine beginning to tear where the spine meets the cover boards. On the inside of the cover, the brown paper that is glued onto the cover board and makes the first page has torn where the closing of the book folds it at the spine. It is starting to tear in back also Below that brown paper is a type of widely woven cheese cloth added for strength which is still intact and holding the covers to the spine. All of the sections of the book are still nice and tight and together. This book is exactly what the title says.....a compilation of articles, short stories, and poetry.
