This Japanese Satsuma Vase dates from the Taisho period which was about 1915 or so. It is all over colored over the glaze which is unlike earlier Satsuma which covered up little of the glaze. The all over crazing of the glaze which is the hallmark of good Satsuma added dimensions of light and shading that was appreciated by the early Satsuma artists and diamos. This vase is about 7 1/2" tall and 4 1/2" in diameter. There are two foo dogs at the top of the vase. This piece incorporated much raised work, or what the trade calls slip trailing into the design. Color is mixed into the liquid clay or slip, giving it body so that it can be used much like cake iceing. There are no chips, cracks, dings or other damage, but there is some paint loss near the bottom. The vase is marked on the bottom in red. I am using a copy of a 1981 A Treasury of Satsuma by Sandra Andacht as a guide so you may be getting a deal. Happy Collecting!!!!
