This is not one of the higher quality Satsuma pieces. It measures 5 3/4" tall and 2 1/4" in diameter. There are two birds with spread wings mounted on the shoulders of the vase. There is not much detail in the piece. The faces of the men are just black ovals with dots and lines to look like eyes nose mouth and eyebrows. There are patchwork colors of grey to light rusty brown, to deeper rust and darker grey highlighted by raised white enamel dots and dots with tails. There is no gold or gilt decoration. The glaze or maybe the clay body seems to be made of a rougher material than I am used to seeing in good Satsuma. There are no chips, cracks, dings or other damage but there is one manufacturer's flaw. It seems that a part of the vase was put too close to another piece in the kiln and you can see where it was pried off the other piece and then probably smoothed down so that there were no sharp spots. This was made during the Taisho period circa 1915. I am using the 1981 Treasury of Satsuma by Sandra Andacht for my price guide. Happy Collecting!!!!
