This is a very large Satsuma Covered Jar or urn. I am told that it was probably decorated by the painter Taizan who was known for working in the particular shade of blue that is in my jar. (ha, ha, what I wasn't told was that there were 8 of the guys, all decorating in different eras from the second generation, 1715 through the 9th generation after 1875. I did find that Taizan Yohei II was distinguished for his use of Mazarine blue which would date this vase to about 1755, based on the vibrant color of blue used.) I personally think that this is one of the nicest pieces of Satsuma that I have ever seen. There is damage however. The foo dog jar top is broken in several pieces, some glued back in and the top of the jar has one large piece out of it. We have taken the pieces and fit them together and they are all there which means that this can be restored without having to make new pieces. I am told that it would cost about 300.00 or more to restore this. My expert says that this would have been worth well over $1500.00 if perfect. The jar measures 19 1/2" tall with the cover and is about 9 1/4" in diameter. Other than what I have already talked about, there is no other damage. This is still good for a jug that is about 248 years old. I am using a 1981 copy of Treasury of Satsuma by Sandra Andacht for a reference as to information and some pricing. Happy Collecting!!!
